Ties: Upcycling made easy

Making something new out of a tie by upcycling it is child's play. Dylon will help you with simple instructions. Sometimes all you need is a needle and thread, and you can turn a rarely worn accessory into a cuddly toy or create a beautiful belt that goes wonderfully with a simple dress. Whether you want to sew a gift for someone else out of your own ties or give your grandpa's old ties a new life, for example - with our tie upcycling instructions you can put your creative idea into practice!

Why upcycling a tie is worth it

Ties are usually made of high-quality fabrics such as silk, but often differ in color and design. From simple models in muted tones to classic patterns to unusual examples with eye-catching prints or a slight shine, there is actually everything. If a tie is thrown out - either because its cut or design no longer corresponds to the fashion or taste of the owner - the accessory is usually still in good condition. Upcycling ties is also worthwhile because they are worn on special occasions and therefore often bring back fond memories. Fortunately, there are many simple and beautiful upcycling ideas for old ties.

Tie upcycling is easy, and you can transform one or more ties into something new.

Tie upcycling idea no. 1: Cuddle snake for children

You can use old ties to make fun fabric snakes for children.

You will need:

· a tie

· two buttons

· cotton wool or another filling material

· a sewing needle

· sewing thread in the base color of the tie

· a small pair of scissors

Here's how:

Step 1: Turn the tie over and check whether it is open at the wider end. If not, carefully unpick the seam here.

Step 2: Then fill the tie with cotton wool until it becomes a firm but soft snake.

Step 3: Now carefully sew the tie at the wider end, turn it over and sew two buttons onto the front part as the snake's eyes.

Done! If you want, you can cut a snake's tongue out of a small piece of fabric and sew it onto the snake's head.

Tie upcycling idea no. 2: Extravagant belt for dresses

One of the most beautiful upcycling ideas for ties is the tie belt.

You will need:

· two ties that match each other well in terms of pattern and color and are the same width

· pins

· a sewing needle

· sewing thread in a matching color

· a small pair of scissors

Here's how:

Step 1: Place the two thick ends of the ties on top of each other as if you wanted to make a long tie out of them. One tip now points in one direction, the other tip in the other. Make sure that the ties are edge to edge. Now fix the ties with the pins.

Step 2: The most complicated part is already done. Now you just have to connect the ties by carefully sewing them together. The best way to do this is with a so-called invisible stitch, where you always stitch in and out of the side seam of the upper tie. This way the thread is not visible later.

Step 3: At the end, simply knot the thread, sew it and cut it off.

Done! The belt is best worn like a Japanese kimono belt, wrapped around the waist and knotted over a plain dress.

Tie upcycling idea no. 3: Patchwork sofa cushions

If you need upcycling ideas for lots of ties, pillowcases are the ideal project. For a nice sofa cushion, you can sew a custom cover out of ten or more ties.

You will need:

· 10 or more ties

· a 53 x 53 cm piece of fabric for the back of the cushion

· a 40 cm long zipper

· a pillow insert measuring 50 x 50 cm

· a sewing needle or sewing machine

· sewing thread in a matching color

Here's how:

Step 1: Lay the ties together on a table, always with a wide and a narrow end next to each other. This creates a rectangular area from which you cut a square measuring 53 x 53 cm.

Step 2: Pin the fabric for the back and the tie square so that you have two 50 x 50 cm squares. Sew these together on three sides, wrong side out.

Step 3: Now sew the zipper in the middle of the fourth side that is still open. Close the holes on the right and left with a needle and thread and turn the pillowcase right side out.

As the very last step, fill the pillowcase with the inlay and drape the pillow on your sofa. Done!
