How to fix a hole in your sweater: It's so easy to save your sweater

We experience quite a lot with our sweaters. Just like the rest of our clothing, they are exposed to stress that takes its toll on the fibers. Unfortunately, favorite sweaters that are a little older tend to develop holes at some point. Annoying, isn't it? If that happens to you, you don't have to part with your sweater with a heavy heart! Because darning a hole in a sweater isn't that difficult! We'll show you how.

How to darn a hole in a sweater:

Darning holes and repairing your sweater or other clothing isn't that difficult! To repair holes in your sweater or a small hole in your T-shirt, you can either do it by hand or with a sewing machine. Both are actually very easy! For small holes in your sweater, darn them with a needle and thread. This is quicker than setting up and preparing the sewing machine. You will need the following:

  • a needle
  • a matching color thread
  • scissors

And then you can start darning the holes in your sweater:

  1. Grab a matching color thread, measure out about 30-40 cm and cut the thread. Now thread the thread through the eye of the needle and tie it off with a knot at the end. Tip: If your sweater is made of a slightly thicker material, we recommend threading the thread twice through the eye of the needle. The thicker thread will give your sweater more stability.
  2. Now place the needle at the top around the hole. Pull the needle and thread through the fabric until the knot gets caught on the inside of the fabric. Now, on the other side of the affected area, find one of the open and protruding stitches and pick it up with the needle and pull the thread through. If you darn the hole in the sweater in this way, the affected area will be more stable.
  3. Now, on the other side, find another open stitch and pull your thread through again. Repeat this process until you have filled all the stitches at the hole with the thread.
  4. If the hole is well closed, you can sew the thread. To finally darn the hole in the sweater, pull the thread through the same place several times to secure it to the garment.
  5. Done! Just cut the thread and you have successfully darned the hole in the sweater!

Darning holes in a sweater: You can do it with a sewing machine too!

If you already sew as a hobby and have a sewing machine at home anyway, you can also use it to darn the holes in your sweater. The advantage: With the machine you can darn the hole and give your sweater more stability, which means the affected area will last longer.

To prepare your machine, put your cover plate on and put the needle and foot up. This gives you space to place your sweater and the affected area exactly under the needle. Now lower the head and ideally start above the hole in your sweater. Lower the needle of the machine and start by sewing back and forth. To do this, set a straight stitch. To darn the hole in your sweater, move the needle from top to bottom and when turning the needle, make a small cross-stroke to better stabilize the thread on the garment. But make sure to move the sewing machine back and forth particularly closely to pick up the stitches well and darn the hole in the sweater evenly and tightly. This should close the hole well. At the end, just cut the thread and your sweater is ready to use again.

Darning holes: always take proper care of your sweater!

So that you don't constantly have to darn small holes in your sweater, you should make sure to stabilize the fibers when washing your favorite clothes. Of course, it can happen from time to time that your sweater gets caught on something and the stitches rip. With a Dylon detergent, your sweaters will not only be deeply clean, but you will also protect them from the stresses and strains of everyday life. To do this, simply use Perwoll Renew Color or Perwoll Renew White when washing. Both strengthen the fibers of your sweaters with each wash and ensure that you don't even have to darn holes in the sweater. Here we give you 15 care tips to ensure that your favorites last forever.
