COLOUR FOR CHILDREN AT HOME

Decorating a nursery is often the first step a couple can take together to prepare for their new arrival so it's very significant. The nervous system in a new born baby is not fully developed which means they are far more sensitive to light and bright colours than adults. Infants need a nurturing, nursery environment with soft, light colours and filtered light.

Painting a nursery in too many bright colours with too much movement and visual stimuli can be disturbing. Babies in these environments have been found to suffer from disturbed sleep, cry more often and even suffer from colic. Pastels or light neutrals such as pale pink, sky blue, apple green, lilac, cream, soft white and light beige are best in a newborn's nursery.

Studies reveal exposing babies to a whole range of colours is best for their development. While a variety of colours provide visual stimulation for a child they are best suited to the play area rather than sleeping area.

Toddlers need a calm but warm environment in order to sleep well, but as they grow, usually around the time they begin to walk, brighter colours will aid their physical and mental development. Researchers have found that children under the age of three find primary colours very attractive.

Children with lively, out-going personalities who are very active and sociable will thrive in a bright, colourful environment that stimulates their senses and challenges their interest in the world. Sensitive children who prefer doing activities on their own are better surrounded by soft, warm colours such as peach, cream, apricot, warm tan and rose pink which offer security and allow their confidence to build.
